El Roi: The God Who Sees You

Have you ever stopped and wondered whether God really notices you when life feels heavy?

I mean… God is the Almighty. The Great I AM. Surely He’s far too busy with what’s happening in the world to pay attention to our small, ordinary struggles. Wars. Famine. Abuse. Murder. Climate crises. Nations rising and falling. Souls being saved...or lost.

With all that going on, how could He possibly notice when our hearts are breaking?

  • When the children won’t listen.
  • When we’re exhausted from constantly meeting everyone else’s needs.
  • When the money just doesn’t stretch far enough to cover the rent.
  • When someone we love is sick.
  • Or when we’re simply sad… unseen… unheard… yet still expected to keep all the plates spinning because there’s no other option.

So the question lingers quietly in the background of our hearts: Does God even notice?

I’m here to tell you - He does.

God loves you so deeply that nothing about your life escapes His attention. Jesus would have endured that brutal death on the cross if you were the only one left on earth in need of salvation. And in His kindness, He didn’t leave you to navigate life alone. He gave you the Holy Spirit as your constant companion and friend. (John 14:15–21). You are never invisible to God.

How Do We Know God Sees & Regards Us?

One of the most powerful examples of this is a woman we often overlook: Hagar.

We tend to focus on Abraham and Sarah, on the covenant and the promises, the big faith moments. In Genesis 17, God establishes His covenant with Abram, changing his name to Abraham — father of many nations — and Sarai’s name to Sarah — mother of nations (Genesis 17:1–16).

But tucked into this story is a woman whose pain God does not ignore.

Who Was Hagar?

Because Sarah was barren, she gave Hagar, her Egyptian maidservant, to Abraham so that children could come through her. Hagar conceived and gave birth to Ishmael, Abraham’s first son. But the situation quickly changes. Sarah feels despised, responds harshly, and Hagar flees into the wilderness.

Alone. Pregnant. Rejected. Running for her life, Hagar encounters God. (Read Genesis 16.)

In Genesis 16:7, the Angel of the Lord finds Hagar by a spring. God meets her in the middle of her pain, listens to her story, and gives her a promise: her descendants would be too many to count.

And then something extraordinary happens.

“Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, ‘You are the God who sees,’ for she said, ‘Have I also here seen Him who sees me?’” (Genesis 16:13)

Hagar names God: El Roi — the God Who Sees.

And He proves it again in Genesis 21:14–20, when Hagar and her son are sent into the wilderness. God hears her cries, opens her eyes, and provides a well of water just when she believes all hope is gone.

Hagar wasn’t part of the chosen covenant of Israel. She wasn’t influential. She wasn’t honoured. She was a servant. A foreigner. A woman with no social standing. And yet - God saw her. And she saw Him.

God Has Always Seen the Cry of a Woman’s Heart

Hagar’s story isn’t the exception. It’s part of a beautiful pattern woven throughout Scripture.

  • Hannah — weeping in the temple, pouring out her soul for a child. God hears her cry. (1 Samuel 1:9–19).
  • The woman with the issue of blood — lost in a crowd, unclean and overlooked. Jesus stops and looks at her. (Mark 5:25–34).
  • The woman caught in adultery — shamed and condemned. Jesus defends her and restores her dignity and her freedom. (John 8:1–11).
  • The Samaritan woman at the well — dismissed by society, avoided by others. Jesus meets her and changes her life. (John 4:1–26).
  • Mary at the cross — while Jesus is enduring unimaginable suffering, He still notices His grieving mother and makes provision for her care. (John 19:25–28).

Most of the women God saw and called didn’t hold status or power. Some were rejected. Some were sick. Some were shamed. Some were enslaved. Many were dismissed as unimportant.

But not one of them was unseen by God.

  • Maybe you feel like you don’t matter where you live.
  • Maybe you don’t have qualifications, wealth, or influence.
  • Maybe your body feels broken.
  • Maybe you’re a single mum doing the best you can.
  • Maybe you’re married and silently hurting.
  • Maybe you feel ignored, overlooked, or unworthy of love.
  • Whatever your story — please hear this clearly:

You matter. You have worth.

God sees you, just as He saw each of these women.

Just as He saw me in my most broken, vulnerable, sin-filled season. He saw me. He changed me.

He called me.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord… (Jeremiah 29:11)

And He sees you too.

Our Prayer For You

Father, we pray for the woman reading this right now that she would know, deep in her spirit, that she is seen by You. Surround her with Your love, grace, mercy, and favour. Let her feel Your nearness and know that You hear every cry of her heart. Bring her peace in the midst of whatever she’s facing, and give her wisdom for the next step. Remind her that she never walks alone or in her own strength when she abides in You.

Thank You for loving her.

Thank You for Jesus - for the cross and the resurrection.

Thank You for freedom, grace, and Your loving-kindness.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
